Concept statement: Cultivating homes around helping individuals living there with mental and physical health issues by using the science of bioluminescence for sensory lighting effects as well as mycoremediation to benefit the user and be a model for the future.
With the use of both mycelium and bioluminescent lighting and inspiration drawn from bioluminescent glow worm caves, the house has a safe space in the basement that is otherworldly, to help the users with their mental health throughout the day.
Background: The Bioluminescent Residences was my final Senior Thesis Project. This project took two iterations, starting with a residence in East Cleveland which had issues involving environmental injustice within the area. I designed a bioluminescent space with the use of fiber optic lighting and a bioluminescent bacterial wall culture in the basement with mycelium acting as a cave wall throughout the home. These ideas were further extended into the second iteration which expanded into the adjacent residences nearby. In these two different buildings I designed a bioluminescent cave system in the basements that connected both residences to a bioluminescent shared space. The research involved included bioluminescent bacteria and organisms as well as mycelium to help alleviate toxins within the environment and also bring an otherworldly experience to the space.
